Being Gay Is About Freedom
I remember, as a heterosexual, losing many gay friends and protesting with ACT UP in D.C against the FDA's slow release of AZT (the first antiretroviral drug). Then the priority was love and care.
Today, it feels like the focus of gay rights has shifted away from the current global priorities. We're immersed in discussions about gender-neutral bathrooms, multicolored flags, and an ever-growing list of acronyms.
We consider it normal that people who "identify" with pronouns are victims of discrimination if, as I’m saying, I feel the whole thing is going too far.
Early pride movements aimed to simply exist openly and assert the humanity of gay and lesbian individuals. Gay rights should remain centered on this pursuit of freedom.
Today—In parts of Africa and Asia, "queer" individuals are still being stoned or jailed.
The enduring criminalization of consensual same-sex sexual acts in 64 UN member states remains a human rights crisis.
