Stanford parking is generally organized by zones, garages, and designated visitor areas rather than ordinary city-style street parking. Most visitor parking is paid, and visitor and hourly paid parking are contactless and managed through ParkMobile. Rules can vary by location, time of day, and special event activity. On major event days—including football games, commencements, conferences, and large lectures—normal parking patterns and access rules may change, so always plan ahead!
Before you arrive on campus, make sure to bookmark these official resources. They are your best defense against parking tickets and unnecessary stress:
Visitor Parking & Parking Enforcement: The official starting point for all visitor parking regulations, rates, and enforcement hours.
ParkMobile Web Checkout: Stanford uses ParkMobile for contactless payment. If you don't want to download the app, use this step-by-step guide to check out as a guest on your mobile browser.
Stanford Parking & Circulation Map: Find the closest garages, commuter lots, and visitor zones to your destination.
EV Charging Stations: Learn where to find the 184 electric vehicle charging ports on campus. (Note: Your EV must be actively charging to park in these spots!)
Parking and Construction Impacts: Check here for road closures, paving projects, or lot renewals that might block your usual route.
Garage Height Restrictions: Driving an oversized vehicle? Check clearances first (e.g., Roble Field Garage has an 8'2" entry but a 7'0" ramp limit).
Pedestrian Zone** & White Plaza Access**: Core campus areas are strictly off-limits to unauthorized vehicles.
For central campus destinations such as the Main Quad, Memorial Church, and the Cantor Arts Center, visitor parking is usually found in nearby lots and garages (like the Roth Way or Via Ortega garages). These areas often fill quickly on weekdays and during special events, and parking may be hourly, time-limited, or otherwise restricted depending on the location.
Museum visitors should expect a short walk from many parking locations, though accessible parking is typically available near major entrances. Near the campus edge and adjacent commercial areas, garages and surface lots may be somewhat easier to use, especially later in the day. For the Medical Center and clinic areas, visitors should expect dedicated garages and paid parking, with validation depending on the facility or appointment. Athletics and major events often bring special traffic controls, temporary parking arrangements, and shuttle service from remote lots.
Stanford parking is managed through zones, garages, and designated visitor areas rather than a simple street-by-street system. Visitor and hourly paid parking are contactless and managed through ParkMobile.
Overnight parking requires specific authorization or the correct permit. Visitors of resident students, for example, need a one-day Resident permit valid until 11:59 p.m. on the selected date. Always follow posted signs, garage instructions, and digital payment prompts for the exact space you are using. Never park on unposted dirt, grass, or undesignated roadsides. If an area is not explicitly marked for parking, assume you may not park there.
Stanford’s free Marguerite shuttle system connects major campus destinations and links campus with the Palo Alto Transit Center and Caltrain. While these routes are convenient, it is important to check their exact stops. For instance, Line P connects only the Palo Alto Transit Center with the Oval via Palm Drive, and Line Y serves a broader clockwise campus loop including El Camino Real, athletic facilities, the GSB, Escondido Village, Tresidder, Campus Drive West, the medical center, and Stanford Shopping Center. Neither line will drop you directly at the Cantor Arts Center or use Museum/Roth Way as their closest stops.
Routes and stop patterns can change, so visitors should check the current Marguerite Live Map before relying on a specific line.
Stanford is also highly walkable and bike-friendly, but distances can be longer than they first appear. A walk between major destinations such as the Main Quad and the Cantor Arts Center can take around ten minutes or more depending on your pace and route.
For the most current information on wheelchair routes, disability access, and other access-related details, use the Diversity and Access Office's official Campus Access Guide. You can also find disability parking guidelines via the Stanford Transportation website. These resources are the best starting point for continuously updated accessibility information, elevator maps, and designated paths of travel.
Always follow posted signs for your exact parking location. Event days can override normal parking rules. Visitor parking is enforced Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. unless otherwise posted, with exceptions such as Beckman Center/Li Ka Shing Center Lot L-15, which is enforced 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and residential/special zones, which are enforced 24/7. Access conditions may vary by lot, garage, and zone, so it is best to verify current rules before you arrive.
Do not leave anything visible inside your car. Not a bag, charging cable, backpack, jacket, or shopping item. If you need to store belongings, place them in the trunk before you reach your destination, not after you park. In busy Bay Area parking areas, visible items can attract opportunistic auto burglars.
If you are visiting the Cantor Arts Center and also want access to the Main Quad, the Roth Way Garage and nearby Museum Way-area parking can be convenient starting points, depending on availability and current restrictions.
For payment, assume visitor parking is paid unless signage clearly says otherwise. Some visitor areas may become free outside standard enforcement periods (like weekends), but that is not universal, so always read the posted rules carefully.
If you are arriving by Caltrain, the free Marguerite shuttle is often the easiest way to get onto campus, but use the current route map and live tracker rather than relying on a fixed line recommendation. On major Stanford event days, allow extra time and expect heavier traffic, reduced parking availability, and possible changes to campus circulation.
Don't get caught waiting in the sun or missing your connection! Use these digital tools to hack your commute:
Marguerite Live Shuttle Tracker: See current Stanford shuttle locations and reduce your wait time.
Caltrain Real-Time App: Monitor live train locations, schedules, and timing to perfectly sync your arrival with the campus shuttles.
